Tangabula joins a mother’s name and a daughter’s, drawing from a naming tradition from our founder’s own community.
Abula, our founder’s name. Tang, her daughter’s. One rooted in the other.
The tradition behind the name
Where Abula comes from, names have long carried more than the person who bears them. Traditionally, a child could be known through their mother’s name — a way of identifying not only who someone was, but the family and lineage they came from.
Tangabula carries that tradition forward in its own way.
Two names joined into one word. Mother and daughter, held together.
What began with a love for beautiful African clothing gradually became something more deliberate: the desire to build something lasting. Something shaped by where we come from, made for the lives we live now, and one day, something a daughter could look at and recognize as her own.
That intention still shapes how Tangabula grows. We work in small numbers. We take our time choosing fabrics, details and finishes. And when doing something properly takes a little more work, we believe it is worth it.
Made for now. Rooted in more.
Tangabula brings together contemporary African fashion and accessories for women who appreciate beautiful clothing without needing to save it for an occasion.
Our collections include boubous, kaftans, kimonos, matching sets and tailored separates, alongside jewelry and accessories chosen to be worn with them.
We work with traditional and contemporary African textiles, alongside other carefully selected fabrics, paying attention to the things that matter once a garment actually becomes yours: how it feels, how it falls, how well it is made and how often you will want to reach for it.
Some pieces carry the character of Aso Oke or Adire. Others bring African design and craftsmanship into fabrics chosen simply because they work beautifully for the garment. Heritage does not have to be worn heavily to remain present.
These are clothes for ordinary days and important ones — for dinners, weddings, church, celebrations, travel, afternoons out, and sometimes simply because you felt like dressing beautifully that day.
